Orange County Business Journal 2023 Companies That Care

We’re thrilled to announce that we have been included in the 2023 list of Companies That Care. Awarded by the Orange County Business Journal (OCBJ) to businesses for their philanthropic efforts and accomplishments, we’re honored to be a part of this list, along with 78 other organizations, and will continue to do good in the Orange County area and beyond.   

As the largest chair manufacturer in North America, we’re committed to making a difference. Through product donations, employee volunteer efforts, and grants from our Exemplis For Good Charitable Giving Fund, we’re always looking for ways to support organizations and schools in our community.  

As of October 2023, we have donated nearly 4000 products to over 25 different organizations, including Santa Ana College, Long Beach Rescue Mission, and the Huntington High School Academy of the Arts, as well as many other deserving local organizations.

Inspiring Innovation Through Diverse Perspectives

We’re so honored to be included in Orange County Business Journal (OCB)’s inaugural Embracing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Special Report. We were included in a list of 62 Orange County businesses recognized, and we were featured in the July 10, 2023, issue.

At Exemplis, we’re focused on inspiring innovation through diverse perspectives and supporting the inclusion and active engagement of all our team members. Our monthly and annual employee engagement surveys say it all — over 82% of our employees feel respected and feel as if diverse perspectives are heard, and 90% of employees are proud to work for Exemplis.

Through our Exemplis Charitable Giving Program (Exemplis for Good) and our Environmental Social Governance (ESG) programs, we strive to not only do right by our employees but also the world around us. Our E-Pride Employee Resource Group participates in community events and donates time and resources to support the LGBTQ+ community year-round.

We’re always dedicated to continuing to evolve our DE&I programs and practices, and we’re proud to be leading the way alongside other top organizations and businesses in the Orange County community.

Our Employees Have Done It Again!

Exemplis is excited to share that The Civic 50 Orange County (offered by Points of Light and in partnership with OneOC) named our organization as an honoree … again!

This year’s recognition makes us a 3x recipient — an achievement that’s simply not attainable without our employees' unwavering commitment to the community.

Surprise! Supplies!

From elementary schools to college campuses, Exemplis serves education with an endless array of seats, tables, accessories and more. Now we’re adding pens, pencils, paper and everything our kids need to learn.

As part of our dedication to serving our communities, we asked our Exemplis family to come together and help collect school supplies. It happens every summer – just in time for the new year. Once collected, all supplies are loaded up and delivered to underserved youth in our local communities.

This year’s drive was a little different – it was virtual. Of course, we still managed to provide everything on time, and our partners at South Gate School District were very appreciative. Our Exemplis team donated and distributed over 500 desperately needed items for students and teachers.

The Civic 50 Orange County, presented by OCBJ in partnership with OneOC, provides a local standard for superior corporate citizenship and showcases how companies can use their time, skills and other resources to improve the quality of life in the community where they do business.

Since 2012, The Civic 50 has recognized the 50 most community-minded companies in the nation each year as determined by an annual survey developed by True Impact. For Orange County, honorees were determined using True Impact’s adapted national Civic 50 online survey that is independently administered and scored.

Companies were selected based upon four dimensions of their community engagement programs: investment, integration, institutionalization and impact.

Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Asians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a rich heritage that spans thousands of years and a history that’s helped shape our country. There has been a sharp escalation in hate speech, hate crimes and other forms of harassment against members of those communities -- and we strongly condemn these acts. As a company, we are always committed to providing a diverse, inclusive and safe space for all. But our words are only the first step in lifting up the Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. There’s more every one of us can do to advance our support and allyship:

• Become educated. Make it your mission to meet people at their humanity, not at their classification. You can find a rich library of resources that’ll help you learn about anti-Asian violence, including what you can do to assist here.
  
  
• Become a voice. If you witness hate happening, you can choose to stay silent or you can choose to act. Silence is complicity.  Let’s stand in support and defense of our Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities – and all ethnic communities that make up our world.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month provides an opportunity to commemorate the many contributions of these communities while acknowledging the injustices they’ve endured and pledging to be part of a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

Dream Big Book Drive!

In honor of MLK Day of Service, we had a dream of donating books to those in need. To help that dream become a reality, our office locations jumped on the challenge and collected as many books as possible. From children’s books and young adult novels to Stephen King thrillers and how-to guides, we accepted them all! In total, our employees gave away over 200 books to two non-profit organizations. The books we collected in California were donated to ReBookIt, which helps local libraries and schools. Everything collected in Florida went to an organization that sends books to our troops deployed overseas.

We were happy to see our team rally for a great cause. Plus, now there’s room on everyone’s bookshelves for more books!

Turning Yards of Fabric Into Yards of Love

This year, our team embarked on a special project with a major purpose: taking thousands of yards of unused fabric and turning it into one-of-a-kind blankets for the homeless. After a handful of fabric samples, rounds of experimentation and hundreds of handwritten notes created by our team, our blankets were ready to go!

In March, we donated 100 blankets to Mercy House in Santa Ana, California. Within four hours, they were all distributed to people in need. Our team recently sent 100 more blankets to the LA Mission and 50 more are in the works for another Mercy House shelter location.

We’re proud to increase our go-green footprint while finding a loving way to give back to our community.

We “Give 100” at the Beach!

Anyone still remember their new year’s resolutions? We do. For 2019, our team made a powerful commitment: to “Give 100” back to our community. Through monetary donations, volunteer hours and donated furniture, our team will do our part to benefit the environment, careers, youth and hunger. To kick it off, we recently took to Huntington Beach for a Saturday beach clean-up.

In partnership with the Surfrider Foundation, our team rallied with family and friends for a morning of eco-friendly service, collecting a total of 623 pounds of trash! Working alongside 300+ volunteers, we left in the sand our go-green footprints (and not a bottle in sight).

As we move into April, we are excited to already be a quarter of the way into our $100,000 “Give 100” goal. Shout out to our beach team for doing their part!

Escaping Away to Margaritaville!

While some people were pulling out their sweaters and scarves for fall, we hit the shore for our annual beach party to celebrate our talented team and continued growth! Three hundred employees from Buena Park and Cypress spent the day enjoying perfect weather and beach games in addition to a gourmet taco bar, full dance floor and photo booth to capture all the fun. This year, we even made the party a coast-to-coast affair with our team in Tampa who had a beach party of their own.

Exemplis at the beach was the perfect way to cap off the summer!

Hello Nano™

Our new, uniquely designed and easy-to-spec modular collection launched this month and we couldn’t contain our excitement. Nano is made up of four curated, comfortable pieces that fit together seamlessly to create whatever shape you need. They can work as standalone pieces or be put together to create thousands of configurations; Nano is truly easy from every angle.

Our entire team has worked diligently for months to design, engineer and bring this collection to life, so it only felt right to take a moment to celebrate. On launch day, everyone got a chance to see the Nano collection up close, play with its configurations and test out how comfortable the line is. To top it off, we toasted with champagne and custom cookie shots filled with a choice of vanilla cream, coconut coffee, cold brew or chocolate milk. The cookies even featured Nano configuration options printed on them (how cool is that?). Our team is excited to see how the Nano helps our customers design the space of their dreams. We hope you love it as much as we do!

A Week of Learning!

During the week of July 23^rd – July 27^th, we hosted our annual Learning Fair! This year, we held fifteen courses and four learning tracks for endless discovery and growth within our talented team members.

The focus of this year’s Learning Fair was to equip our team with the skills, knowledge and resources necessary to thrive in our rapidly changing and growing business. With more products to be released this year than ever before – especially with the addition of our new Symmetry line - we’ve been experiencing exponential growth and exciting change. Our four learning tracks for this year focused on Innovation, Resiliency, Communication/Collaboration and Business Acumen, with courses taught by our functional leaders and HR team, wellness coaches and a guest keynote speaker!

Highlights from the week included meditation in the courtyard, lunchtime yoga, an interactive teamwork game…and so much more!

A Chair Fit for a Hero.

This past week we said "see you later" to one of our Exemplis team members who is being deployed with the Army National Guard. It seemed only fitting to send her off with an epic surprise that included cake, toy soldiers and one special chair! 

When we found out that one of our very own Exemplis team members was being deployed, we wanted to create something that was true to our company and honored her service. We came up with the Hero’s Chair, which serves as the ultimate THANK YOU to our Exemplis team members who choose to serve our country in the military. While our team member is deployed, this chair will remain at her desk as a symbol of our support, respect and admiration. Once our hero returns from deployment, she will sign the back of the chair to forever signify her sacrifice and our appreciation. This chair will live on for future service members who join our team and serve their country.

On her last day before deployment, we surprised her with the chair, a signed picture, a patriotic cake and small toy soldiers for everyone to place on their desks as a sign of unity with her.

Our final promise to our hero before her deployment, “we will save you a seat.”

We’re Feeling 22!

At the beginning of February, we celebrated our 22nd birthday! In 1996, Exemplis started with just 3 employees, a fax machine and a bell that was rung every time a chair came down the conveyor belt. Fast forward to today, we are now a 900+ person team, shipping thousands of custom-designed chairs a day and experiencing explosive growth every year.

For our 22nd birthday we decided to throw it back to the 90s with funfetti cake, balloon artwork and champagne. Our teams in Cypress, California, Buena Park, California and Mexico all celebrated the hard work, dedication and innovation of the last 22 years. Beyond the sugar rush and Instagram worthy balloon art, this celebration served as a big thank you to our teams for their commitment and talent – cheers to another 22 years!

Sun, Sand and Seats!

The end of summer means it is time to have a company picnic to celebrate our big wins and hard work. “Company picnic” usually means park BBQs, bounce houses and checkered cloth picnic tables. Of course, we don’t subscribe to doing anything typical, so we decided to go quintessential California with a beach party!  Our team was treated to an afternoon of sun, sand and games. We had the opportunity to climb a rock wall, capture funny faces in a VW bus photo booth, play sports, eat delicious Hawaiian BBQ, indulge in hand-dipped ice cream bars, dance with our toes in the sand and spend quality time with 300 of our team members from both Buena Park and Cypress.

It couldn’t have been a more perfect day to have Exemplis at the beach!

Re-launched Websites Make a Decadent Debut

On July 12th, we launched new versions of our SitOnIt Seating, ChairBuilder and IDEON websites. This was accomplished by our Digital IT, Creative, Marketing and IT Operations teams who have worked tirelessly over the last few months to ensure all three revamped websites represent the innovation, customization and modernization of our products. This kind of hard work definitely merited a celebratory treat!

As a surprise to the team that worked on this project, we had three custom cakes created with images of the new home pages in the center. Surrounding the images were the names of each person who worked on the project. At Exemplis, we always subscribe to the rule that cake is best served with champagne, so we topped off the celebration with a champagne toast.

There’s nothing better than commemorating milestones as sweet as this one!
